When Eric Quan started Engine Works in 1987, he had only two tool boxes, $40 in advertisement flyers and a small pickup truck he purchased from a friend. His first dollar bill on the wall was actually a minus $15 bounced check from a customer for whom he installed an alternator belt. Eric slowly grew the business by working on friends’ and family members’ cars and then graduating to used-car lots and other word-of-mouth clientele. By 1989 he leased his first 400-square-foot, one-bay shop in Svendsen’s boatyard. He spent the next 13 years expanding his Clement Avenue shop from 1,500-square-feet to almost 10,000 and in 2002, Eric qualified for a small business loan, which was used to open his current location at 1923 Minturn Street.
Having been a shop owner since 1987, Eric has learned a thing or two about running a successful automotive repair business. He has retained top-notch employees and built relationships with customers that keep them coming back year after year.
COMPANY PHILOSOPHY
Our staff includes five full-time, fully certified California smog technicians, and two service writers. I always consider that they work with me and not for me. This distinction makes a huge difference, making them feel they’re part of a team and that their contributions and opinions are valued.
Our focus on all brands including Porsches, Mercedes and other exotics gives us a productivity edge, because our technicians see many cars and problems repeatedly and they have the necessary equipment and skills to diagnose and repair the cars efficiently. We moonlight doing performance engine repair and rebuilding for those customers looking for a little more horsepower. When hybrids started to take off on a mass level, we bought a Toyota Prius to learn firsthand how they work and feel, after many hours of hybrid classes. Our team also has a tow truck to give customers the very best service possible.
